Great Expectations

The responsibility of being a business owner.

Behind Bars managed to become a carbon negative company virtually overnight, which means we now remove more carbon from the atmosphere than our business activity creates.

It wasn’t difficult and it’s not expensive.

When many of us are in the midst of total free fall professionally and personally due to COVID and how it has ravaged our industry, The climate crisis is, really, our biggest problem.  After COVID is under control and everyone who has lost their jobs are re-employed and after everyone has struggled through these hard times and is back on their feet, the climate crisis will still be hanging over us, like a doom shroud.

Often, the magnitude of the task feels overwhelming; read the warnings of tipping points, the conflicting views on what helps, what doesn’t, the inability or unwillingness of states  to implement viable solutions, and it becomes easy to turn away, easy to focus on the day-to-day, mundane drudgery of keeping our own heads above water, let alone everyone else’s also.

But, we’ve managed to become a carbon negative company virtually overnight, it wasn’t hard and it’s not expensive and we believe it will make a difference.

“The most difficult part was understanding if what we were investing in would actually help in any way. Oh, and finding out how what we do for a living (designing and producing stainless steel bar stations for venues all around the world) impacts our climate.”

There are companies out there that will help you understand the carbon footprint of what you do, carbonfootprint.com, and there are companies out there, we use CHOOOSE.today, that will help you offset that carbon by investing in various projects that reduce carbon emissions.

To be honest, we’re a little ashamed that it has taken us so long to pull our fingers out when it literally takes a couple of hours to become a carbon negative company.  Our clients absolutely love that we do this, which just adds another layer of value to the whole operation.

Our next step is to start squeezing our suppliers to offset the things we use to make our business go around. We should all be demanding this from our suppliers, this way we all share the load, and ultimately, we all share the benefits.

If you’re interested in implementing something similar and are unsure where to start, get in touch and I can share with you what we did.
